OUR STORY
A heritage of faith.
As we look back, we celebrate the faithfulness of God and look forward to all He will
continue to do through Heritage Baptist Church.
Heritage Baptist Church began on August 31, 1975, when founding pastor Dr. LeRoy Pennell held the church’s very first service in Barrie, Ontario. From those humble beginnings, God has faithfully used Heritage to reach people with the Gospel, teach His Word, and serve families in the Barrie community.
Just a few years later, in 1978, Heritage Christian Academy was established. The academy became an important part of the church’s ministry to families, providing Christ-centred education and an opportunity to invest in the next generation.
For 40 years, Dr. LeRoy Pennell faithfully served as the senior pastor of Heritage Baptist Church. Under his leadership, the church grew and developed ministries that have impacted generations of people. Heritage also had the privilege of supporting the work of establishing other Baptist churches and ministries throughout Ontario.
In November 2015, Dr. Pennell was succeeded as senior pastor by his son, Pastor Brett Pennell. This transition marked a new chapter in the life of Heritage while continuing the church’s commitment to the biblical foundation established from its earliest days.
Today, Heritage Baptist Church continues to serve the Barrie community, seeking to faithfully preach the Word of God, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, strengthen families, and reach the next generation.
As we look back over more than five decades, we are reminded that our story is ultimately a story of God’s faithfulness. We are thankful for those who faithfully served before us, grateful for the opportunity to serve Christ today, and looking forward with faith to what God will continue to do through Heritage Baptist Church.
